Designing the future of performance cars with the push to electrify and self drive – Local CAD Guru

Industry experts predict that the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) may live for another 10-20 years. This example is on display at our local Ferrari dealership. What makes a Ferrari a Ferrari? How will exotic and hyper car manufacturers differentiate themselves in a future of electrically powered and driverless cars?

Ferrari Engine Design

After the introduction of the automobile, horse and buggy riding became mostly limited to leisure, track events… Horses are not allowed on major freeways, nor are they used on a daily bases. At some point the personal automobile powered by an ICE will stop being justifiable. On top of that, people may not be allowed to drive on public roads in the future, as cars would drive themselves better than any human can.

Today we are designing the future of performance cars with the push to electrify and self drive. ICE will give way to an e-pack (electrode drive train). Cost will continue to drop down with economies of scale, new battery technology, and smarter packaging.

From a performance car point of view, these changes may lead us back to basics. Have you had a chance to drive an electric go kart or a Tesla? The instant torque is addicting to say the least. One would be better off paying for an e-powered bare boned track machine like an Ariel Atom with a roof and windows and some air conditioning, or even a stripped down version of a modern Tesla Roadster. No need for fancy leather seats, SAT Nav’s, cruise control, turn signals, airbags, lane departure warning systems, blind spot monitored, radar, laser, and insane sensors as humans will not be allowed to drive.

How will Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and others survive? There will be many mergers and platform sharing between major automotive players that we’ve started to see already.

Just like having major computer chip suppliers like Intel, we will have a handful of e-pack suppliers that supply the entire industry with the electric motor, drive modules, cooling, and batteries.

Automakers will just spec out a ready made e-pack solution from their supplier’s catalog for use in their vehicle, allowing them to go from concept to production way faster. Porsche, BMW, Tesla do not design their own brake calipers. They spec out parts from a Brembo, and maybe Denso or Bosch for their brake management system. Huge disruption are coming our way, and only the fittest organizations will survive.
